#SHREDSCHOOL
& YOUTH RIDER DEVELOPMENT.
INTRODUCING B1KE SHREDSCHOOL
B1KE have been working to improve the MTB skills of younger riders for many years. Our ‘ShredSchool’ school holiday programme is a showcase of how both the sport, and the expectations of what can be achieved within it, continue to move on with every new generation of riders, and our coaching programmes help to underpin the development of the sport. As well as the personal development that training affords, it is also a great way to meet other like-minded riders, form friendships and push your limits.
In a digital age where it is easy for young people to get enveloped into a virtual existence, mountain biking offers the opportunity to broaden horizons, enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and immerse yourself in nature’s beauty. Led by qualified, DBS checked instructors, these sessions provide structured training in a fun, friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
#ShredSchool is the only school kids DON’T want a break from!

THE GRADING SYSTEM
What do those colours mean? We look to put your shredder in the best possible group to help them progress, so please read the below carefully.
If you’re still unsure, please ask and we’ll be happy to advise.
GREEN
BEGINNER/ROOKIE
This is where we input and practice base core skills techniques. It caters for the novice through to those who have potentially had a prior session or two, but are still building trail confidence and require prompts to adopt a good core position on trail (level pedals, body position, not sitting, etc). This is definitely not something to ignore and within these sessions, riders can be pushed further onto harder terrain until they’re recognising their own body position on trail.
Trails used – Green/Blue grade
BLUE
INTERMEDIATE
For those that have the hang of a strong position on the bike, we introduce further techniques (such as cornering, steep, drops, small jumps, etc.), and look to develop their natural adaptation of body position for effective control on more varied terrain. Less time is spent on basic core skills at the start, so it’s important they know what we’re talking about!
Trails used – Green/Blue /Red grade
RED
ADVANCED
This is for the competent riders that have demonstrated a good knowledge and application of body positioning, cornering and control in a variety of trail types. They will already have some experience riding Red graded trails with good control and we now look to coach them in harsher trail environments on their own independent decisions. It will include areas such as line choice, section planning, trail walks, riding blind, off camber roots, steep trails and drops etc.
PLEASE NOTE THIS SESSION IS USUALLY DEMANDING FROM THE START AND IS NOT THE PLACE FOR ANYONE WHO HASN’T MASTERED BIKE CONTROL.
Trails used – Blue /Red/Black grade

FAQ
We have AM and PM sessions each day. Groups will be graded using a Green–Blue–Red progression system covering from complete novice to advanced riders looking to develop, hone and improve technique. If having read the above you’re not sure, please tell us a bit more and we can assess which level is most suitable for your rider to ensure their maximum and safe progression.
Rogate/Wind Hill is not suitable for novices in this coaching format, and there is an expectation that all attendees will have reasonable competency on single track/DH trails. If your child has never had any skills coaching input, we recommend doing the Surrey Hills sessions first. Your child’s safety is paramount, so feel free to contact for clarification.
Friends can be booked as groups at the level of the least experienced rider. If unsure at all, please ask or call 07748 641174 to discuss.
The minimum age we coach in open groups is 7 years old, but this really depends on riding experience. Participants must be competent bicycle riders who can manage a ride of around 5 miles (for Green level); feel free to call for advice. Maximum age is 16. During ShredSchool, all children will be under the care and supervision of B1ke instructor staff. Before and after the session, children will need appropriate adult supervision to ride in accordance with current policy (under 14).
We accept riders on to our sessions based upon their ability not age, so they need to be aware there may be smaller/taller/older/younger riders there. Rest assured though, we vet rider experience and ability before accepting them to ShredSchool, especially the more advanced group as this ensures they are in the appropriate group for everyone’s progression.
Yes, all participants must register at B1ke.com as a member and provide proof of membership on the day (QR code). We offer two levels of membership – either free or network. Both will permit your child entry to ShredSchool.
Apart from a desire to have some of the best fun ever, they will need a serviceable bike which is suitable for riding off road (no road tyres, etc). It must have working brakes and be safe to ride – bikes will be inspected at start. They will also need a properly fitting helmet. A drink and snack should be carried and the remainder comes down to personal comfort, dependent on weather.
